What is oil canning?
Oil canning, in simple terms, is the wavy textured that can be seen on metal, in our case metal roofing, after installation.
What causes it?
The main and most common causes are, the structure underneath, and over fastening of the panels during installation.
Unfortunately, structures are not perfect. Some buildings have beams with irregularities that become more visible when you lay the metal panels on top.
What panels are prone to oil canning?
All types of metal roofing panels are prone to oil canning. Galvalume, Aluminum, Copper, etc. However, there are profiles with certain textures, like striations, that can reduce the appearance of oil canning.
The good news is that metal expands and contracts with time, so as it settles on the structure, oil canning tends to become less visible.
Oil canning, even at a small scale is almost inevitable, however, this doesn’t affect the functionality or durability of the roof. When properly installed, metal roofing is the most durable and reliable roofing option available.
